Coming Home in the Night

IMG_1723

mud step
the heavy dark
starlit, moonlit
thick owl silence
when the nearest warm
heart panting hot breath
distills on the grass
a coyote yaps
floating on the day’s ebbing warmth
smells of wet grass and thick soil
bank and plunge
and the rickety screen door
the crickets and crying frogs
the creaks and yaps and wails and
slams
home lit but just
a ruffle in the plumage of the night
